The 2013 Plein Air Art Exhibition and Sale will be held on Saturday, September 14 from 6 – 10 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church Social Hall, at 6253 Church Street. This is the tenth annual Plein Air Art Show.

“Plein Air” is a French term that means painting in the open air – working directly from the landscape as it appears in the moment. More than forty artists from many states paint for two days throughout Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. What a wonderful landscape to capture!

Artists will paint at locations throughout the islands, recording scenes with their paints and brushes before the movements of sun and clouds alter the lighting and scenery. It is especially interesting to see how the artists’ styles  imbibe each landscape with their own special perspective.

The press of time and changing light make plein air work energetic and exciting.

If you come and visit Chincoteague during the weekend of the Exhibition, you can see the artists at work.  Some will be eager to speak with you about their work. Others are so engrossed with their work they may not be aware of any onlookers.  Watching a painting develop under the capable hand of one of these artists is interesting to watch, although it does require a little patience.

The sale of the works on Saturday night is the culmination of the event. Meet the artists, discuss their method and bring a beautiful landscape of Chincoteague home with you.

Lodging in Chincoteague

No matter what activity brings you to Chincoteague, Miss Molly’s Inn is a wonderful lodging choice. A historic home in the downtown area, this was the home where Misty of Chincoteague author Marguerite Henry stayed when visiting the island to work on her book. We hope you will board with us as well and continue the tradition!
