Some of the best fishing grounds on the Mid-Atlantic Coast are found in the waters surrounding Chincoteague Island. Fish either the inland waterways surrounding the Island or venture into the open Atlantic Ocean for deep sea fishing. Whatever your preference, fishing in Chincoteague is going to be a fun and productive experience.

Chincoteague Flounder Fishing

By far one of the most popular fish to hook, flounders are prevalent in the spring and early summer months in the channel. By June, Flounder are competing with croakers for food.

Spring time flounder fishing in Chincoteague Bay depends highly on two factors: water clarity and temperature. Most fisherman agree that flounder start biting when water temperatures reach 50 degrees. The best fishing of the year is usually in water between 60 and 70 degrees.

Water clarity is just as important as temperature. Flounder feed by sight and if the water resembles chocolate milk the fish will have a hard time seeing your bait. Usually the creeks and the western shore (in a west wind) retain more clarity.
