Chincoteague Island Pony Swim 2015

The 90th annual Chincoteague Island Pony Swim is scheduled for the last week of July, 2015 – if you haven’t reserved your rooms yet, time is of the essence!

Easily the busiest time of the year on the island, the Chincoteague Island Pony Swim is the must-see event of the year, every year, on Virginia’s eastern shore. If you’ve yet to witness this iconic spectacle, add it to your bucket list or, better yet, make plans to get on down here this year while you still can.

The annual Chincoteague Island Pony Swim week, this year starting on the 25th of July and continuing to the 31st, includes two round-ups, a beach walk, two swims, a parade, pony auction, and the attendant Chincoteague Fireman’s Carnival.

The 2015 Chincoteague Island Pony Swim breakdown is as follows:

The Pony Round Up: July 25th and 26th
The Beach Walk: July 27th
THE MAIN EVENT! Pony Swim to Chincoteague: July 29th
Parade To Carnival Grounds: July 29th
The Pony Auction: July 30th
The Pony Swim Back to Assateague: July 31st

Assateague Island is home to two herds of wild horses, one on the north end of the island, one in the south. Periodically, Chincoteague’s Saltwater Cowboys – also the Volunteer Firemen responsible for the annual summer carnival – round up the ponies for medical checks and, once a year, swim them across the channel between Assateague and Chincoteague at slack tide in order to cull ponies from the herd for auction.

Proceeds from the auction and carnival go towards the Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman/Saltwater Cowboys who, in turn, use the funds to care for the wild ponies of Assateague Island.
